Why Finding Your Niche Matters

To be successful in any creative industry, especially early on, you have to find your niche.
At first, experimenting is necessary. Say yes to different projects. Take the jobs that teach you what you like and what you don’t. I did that. I said yes to everything because I was learning.
But eventually, you reach a point where clarity matters more than exposure.
You can’t build a sustainable creative business without knowing:
Once I found my niche, I started turning people away. The budget, the vision, the couple, and the energy all had to align with my business. Now I’m intentional with everything I do, from the projects I accept to the way I show up creatively.
Finding your niche doesn’t happen overnight. It starts with self-awareness. These journaling prompts can help you gain clarity and direction.
1. What type of content pulls you in the most?
Music videos, weddings, elopements, documentaries, shows, blogs, short films. What do you watch without forcing yourself?
2. What do you not enjoy and want to do less of?
Writing, branding, talking on camera, filming, editing, working alone, working face-to-face with people?
3. If money wasn’t an issue, what would your dream job be?
Let yourself fantasize. Directing, Writing, or Editing? What do you daydream about?
4. What can I do today to move one step closer to my goal?
Make a plan? Go outside and take photos? Write a short story? Reach out to creative friends and collaborate? Take a moment to reflect and get moving.

Hope this helps. If you try any of the journaling prompts, let me know. I’d love to hear your story.
